Goal 1: Reduce our waste to landfill by 50 % by 2027

What have we done so far?

In 2022, we saved 40 tonnes of waste from going to landfill by reducing waste at the source and partnering with key suppliers to convert waste into valuable commodities. For example:

  • Diverting wooden pallet waste which would have gone to landfill, into kitchen cabinetry
  • Converting the backing paper from labels which would have gone to landfill, into commercial building insulation material

Goal 2: Reduce our carbon footprint by halving our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and substantially reducing Scope 3 emissions by 2027

What’s in progress?

  • We’re currently scoping out installing solar at our operating sites
  • We are investigating hybrid vehicles to replace our current fleet for our sales teams
  • We are working with key suppliers to better understand our Scope 3 emissions

What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?

Scope 1 - this includes “direct” emissions from our sites and vehicles

Scope 2 - this covers “indirect” emissions generated from other facilities which we then use, eg a power station

Scope 3 – all other indirect emissions that are created throughout the value chain – these are outside of our direct control

Invest in the wellbeing of our people and communities.

Goal 1: Foster and enhance an inclusive, connected and diverse culture

What have we done so far?

  • Developed a Diversity strategy that will enable us to continue to create a diverse and inclusive environment where our employees can safely express their identities
  • Developed a Diversity and Inclusion Action plan which represents our commitment to embrace, recognise and increase the representation of diverse groups across Yates
  • Continued to provide our employees access to education, training and services to support their health and wellbeing
  • Partnered with Dylan Alcott's organisation, Get Skilled Access, to review our recruiting processes for disability accessibility and inclusive recruitment

Goal 2: Use our brands as a force for good within the community

What have we done so far?

  • We have recently partnered with One Tree Per Child to plant native trees to support local communities and improve climate resilience
  • We have also partnered with headspace and will be developing a wellness program that will have a positive impact on young people’s mental health and wellbeing

What does force for good" mean?
Force for good means to use our brands to produce meaningful benefits to society, such as the programs and work we are doing via our partnerships

Evolve our products and business through a sustainable lens.

Goal 1: Make our packaging re-usable or recycle-ready by 2025

What’s in progress?

  • Whilst there currently is no recycling stream for soft plastics, we’re making our packaging recycle-ready for when a soft plastics recycling stream (Redcycle or other) is available again
  • Packaging for regulated products (such as Insecticides) currently cannot be recycled due to strict conditions set by the APVMA (Australian Government regulatory body). We are, however working on solutions, including advocating with the relevant Regulators in relation to the recyclability of regulated products, to enable packaging for these products to be recycled in the future
We’re constantly working with our packaging suppliers for innovative ways to be more sustainable
  • Yates have joined the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) Program, which helps consumers recycle our products correctly with a clear & consistent on-pack labelling program. So far we have included the ARL logo on our Yates Zero Triple Strike bottles and will soon be rolling this out across all our packaging.

What does "recycle ready" mean?
Packaging that can either be recycled now, or is ready to be recyclable. In instances where a recycling stream is currently unavailable (e.g. soft plastics), it means that the packaging itself is ready for recycling once a recycling stream is available.

Goal 2: Increase the amount of recycled content in our packaging

What have we done so far?

  • We have moved to 60% recycled content in our Yates Weed ‘n Feed granular bags and Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food

What’s in progress?

  • We are changing our Yates Weed ‘n Feed bottles to include 50% recycled content

Goal 3: By 2030 have at least 30% of our sales from sustainable products

What’s in progress?

  • We’re currently developing a new product that uses a waste stream from one of our fertilisers
  • We’re partaking in ground-breaking research to source fertilisers from circular waste streams

What does "Sustainable Products" mean?
These are best in class products which have been assessed against a set of criteria including the product's life cycle environmental benefits, packaging sustainability benefits, significant health or safety benefits, eco-certifications and any other significant sustainability benefit not already mentioned. The assessment compares the product against the standard product in the market (or the product it is replacing) and the relative benefits must represent a significant improvement compared to the standard (eg. 20% better life cycle assessment score)
