The third generation has taken rein at Adelaide lawn seed and garden care business Munns, revamping the 67-year-old brand.
Sisters Dallas and Alexandra Munn are now leading the company, taking over from their mum, Julie, who was managing director for more than 30 years.
Munns was started by Dallas and Alexandra’s grandfather, Brian Munn, in 1948.
Dallas Munn said its new branding – ‘if you want the best, it must be Munns’ – and product packaging reflected the current trends in gardening, where people were seeking environmentally-friendly and contemporary products.
Among Munns’ unique selling points, she said, was the rigorous seed testing of its products through Rutgers University in the US.
“Munns lawn seeds are among the best in the world and our purity always exceeds the industry standards,” said Ms Munn.
“Our lawn seeds have a minimum germination of 85 per cent and a maximum germination of 99.9 per cent, so we know we can offer some of the best products in the lawn care category.”
A wholesale operation, Munns supplied businesses such as Bunnings, Mitre 10, Garden Grove and independent nurseries. “Ours is a quality product, you get what you pay for,” said Ms Munn.
“Our success is about understanding what the conditions are for Australia and once people try our product they keep coming back. I also think the customer gets a sense of comfort and confidence from a company that’s been in business for almost 70 years.”
Munns employs 20 staff at its Lonsdale headquarters and its products include lawn seed, fertilisers and pest control.
Ms Munn said the aim was to continuing growing the brand in Australia and there was potential to start exporting Munns products overseas.
