To keep your lawn in its best condition you should be mowing it regularly.
To keep things simple for you, we have put together these top 5 mowing tips for your lawn.
1. Check your mower blades
Prior to mowing your lawn you should always check if your mower blades are dull or blunt. Dull or blunt blades can tear and damage the grass rather than giving it a clean cut.
2. Mow in the right weather
If possible, you should always mow your lawn when the weather is fine and the grass is not wet. Mowing on wet grass is likely to make the clippings clump, the finished cut will not be as neat and tidy as normal, and the grass may stick to the underside of your mower and clog the motor.
3. Recycle your lawn clippings
You can add the clippings back on to your lawn provided you are not removing more that one third of the grass blade.
4. Cool season grasses like it long
The optimal mowing height for cool season grasses in summer is 5cm and in winter, it should be around 3cm.
Cool season grasses are:
• Tall Fescue varieties
• Rye varieties
• Fine Fescues varieties
• Kentucky Bluegrass varieties
5. Warm season grasses like it shorter
The optimal mowing height for warm season grasses in summer is 1cm and in winter, it should be around 2 cm. If you have a couch grass, try not to cut the grass during winter at all except to remove soursobs or winter weed growth.
Warm season grasses are:
• Kikuyu varieties
• Couch varieties
• Buffalo varieties
