The principle of this challenge involves taking a little time out once a week to go outside into your yards, take a walk around and simply check on things while enjoying some fresh air. 

You’ll notice that just by monitoring your yard’s progress each week, it will become far easier to maintain, as you can diagnose and treat any problems early.

Weekend warrior, whilst mowing note what needs doing and spend 10 minutes on that task before putting the mower away.

Sunday session, enjoy a beer or wine whilst watering your lawn on a Sunday afternoon.

Weekday destress, taking a bit of time for yourself can be very therapeutic and simple tasks like hand weeding or watering can be done either before or after work. Or even both!

Busy family, take the time to teach your kids about the environment and involve your kids in your lawn care routine.

Set aside 10 minutes to walk around your lawn and look for the following signs: 

If you see a couple of weeds in the lawn, pull them out right then and there. Doing this regularly can help reduce the need for any weed spray.

If the blades of your lawn are not springy back or are shrinking in size or even looking grey then your lawn is telling you that it is in need of a drink. Take this opportunity to water your lawn in line with watering restriction guidelines.

Pro tip: This can be quite time consuming so purchasing an inexpensive sprinkler or installing sprinklers will help make this task far easier in the future. Just turn on the sprinkler in one area and pull weeds in another.

Have a quick look at the edge of your lawn to see if the lawn runners are beginning to creep into the garden bed. If they are and the runner is still quite young, pull it out. This will help you avoid a big garden clean up in the future.

Pro tip: Runners can contain growing parts of the turfgrass plant and can be replanted and established in bare areas, keep well watered for good success. 

If you have a sprinkler system, double check the pop-ups are free and clear from surrounding soil and overgrowing grass.

Pro tip- Use catch cans (or empty tuna cans) and place them around your lawn to ensure you are getting equal amounts of water over your lawn. It’s also a good way to work out how many mm’s of water you are getting per minute.

Remain vigilant for this one particular between September and April, if you notice the early stages of any pest problems like yellow/brown patches, put it on the list for the weekend and do a check for lawn pests by placing a damp towel on the surface overnight.

When walking across your lawn, you should be able to feel under your foot a spongy bouncy feeling if the lawn has excessive thatch build up. You may also see an increase in pest, disease and poor water infiltration. If it’s in the early stages make a note to use a dethatching rake as soon as possible.

Pro tip: Catch your lawn clipping to help reduce build up of thatch.

If the lawn has lost its colour and it’s not winter or a drought, then the lawn definitely needs some fertiliser. Don't do it now, leave it for the weekend when you can take a few extra minutes to spend enjoying your lawn and garden.
